Rod Thurley
Born in Nashville, Tennessee, I’m a rare blend: a
first-generation American who can say "y’all"
without much of a southern twang, thanks to my
Scottish mom and English dad. It’s like having a
tea-drinking, haggis-loving GPS instead of an
accent.
I spent my college years at Purdue and MTSU,
although most people remember me zooming past
them on an off-road motorcycle, racing
professionally for seven years. My college days
were as fast as they were blurry.
In 1996, I hit the brakes on bikes and shifted to
buying an RV dealership, running it until 2014. I
retired at 49 to chase some solitude—and
salmon—in Alaska for three years. Now, I’m a
Vistage CEO Chair and Coach in Middle
Tennessee, using my “been-there-done-that”
wisdom to help folks navigate their business
journeys strictly by invite or referral (I don’t do
door-to-door).
On the personal side, I’ve been married to my
college sweetheart for 37 years. We’ve got two
kids, Hannah and Hunter, both married, who were
raised on two simple rules: “Do what’s right” and
“Do the Best that you can do”—whether racing
motorcycles or unloading the dishwasher. Our
daughter brought us one adorable six-month-old
granddaughter, and our son has twins on the way
(send help, or at least coffee!).
When I’m not coaching or being “Big Papi,” I’m
usually fishing, hunting, riding motorcycles, or
spending time on my farm in West Tennessee. I’m
also a Tennessee Titans season ticket holder from
day one, proving my loyalty beyond reason—or at
least beyond the playoffs.
